Tennis’ Carlsson, Loup Named ITA Scholar Athletes

BATON ROUGE — Two members of the LSU men’s tennis team earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete honors as Cody Loup and Sebastian Carlsson made their mark on the list released by the ITA on Friday.

Carlsson earned the honor for the second-straight year as he continues to succeed both on and off the court. In 2009, while working toward a major in biological sciences, Carlsson earned Second-Team All-Louisiana honors in addition to garnering a spot on the Southeastern Conference’s Academic Honor Roll.

Loup earned the honor for the first time on the heels of receiving his first letter at LSU. The mechanical engineering major competed in his first dual match for the Tigers during the NCAA Second Round and also earned a place on the SEC Academic Honor Roll for his efforts in the classroom.

“Being successful on and off the court is what we want from all of our athletes,” LSU head coach Jeff Brown said. “Cody and Sebastian really get it and are taking full advantage of their unique opportunity.”

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, an athlete must be a varsity letter winner, earn a grade point average of at least 3.5 and have been enrolled in their present school for at least two semesters.

Both Loup and Carlsson are entering their junior seasons with the Tigers and will return to the courts for the 2009-10 season.
