LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — LSU softball signee Rachele Fico racked up four strikeouts as part of two shutout innings as Team Battle notched a 2-0 victory over Team Undeniable in the Under Armour All-America Softball Game at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex.
Fico entered the game in the fifth inning and immediately struck out the side, including Arizona signee Brigette Del Ponte. The Connecticut native got Oklahoma signee Keilani Ricketts to foul out and mowed down another Sooner signee Jessica Shults to cap the sixth inning. Her two scoreless frames were part of a no-hitter for Team Battle.
“I was working both the inside and outside parts of the plate,” Fico said during a postgame interview with ESPN’s Michele Smith. “My curve ball was my big strikeout pitch and [catcher] Lindsey [Ziegenhirt] did a great job of framing it behind the plate. I can’t wait to get down to LSU and be a Tiger. I move down there in about a month, and I’m very excited to start my collegiate career.”
Fico led Masuk High School to a pair of state championships and broke the national record for career perfect games during her senior season. She racked up 26 perfect games, 47 no-hitters, 95 shutouts and 1,887 strikeouts en route to a 105-3 record with a 0.07 ERA over her high school career. Earlier this month, Fico picked up Louisville Slugger/NFCA and EA Sports High School All-American First-Team accolades.
