BATON ROUGE — LSU sophomore Walter Henning captured two of the special awards announced by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association on its final team of the 2008-09 athletic year, the All-Louisiana Track and Field teams.
The team is made up of the top three times or distances recorded in the state in the outdoor season and the special awards were voted on by the state track and field sports information directors.
Henning was named the men’s top field athlete and the newcomer of the year for a first-year non-freshman performer in Louisiana.
The rest of the men’s awards went to Trindon Holliday of LSU (track athlete of the year) and Richard McKay of Louisiana-Monroe (freshman of the year).
The women’s awards were distributed as follows: LaTavia Thomas of LSU (track athlete of the year), Heather Davis of Louisiana-Monroe (field athlete of the year), Rachel Laurent of LSU (freshman of the year) and Lashannda Worthy of Louisiana Tech (newcomer of the year).
LSU’s Dennis Shaver was chosen as the coach of the LSWA team.
Henning has proven to be one of the premier throwers in the history of the LSU track and field program after just his first season at LSU after transferring from Baton Rouge. The two-time All-American is the NCAA runner-up in the hammer throw becoming just the third LSU player to earn A-A honors in the hammer, while breaking the LSU record in the seven by more than 13 feet.
Holliday finished the year as a three-time All-American, becoming the third LSU Tiger in the last four years to win the NCAA title in the 100-meter dash at the NCAA Championship with a new personal-best time of 10.00 seconds. His time is currently ranked No. 5 in the world this season as of mid-June.
McKay of ULM earned freshman honors off a first year in which he won the Sun Belt conference javelin championship and advancing to participate in the NCAA outdoor championships.
On the women’s side, Thomas earned three All-American honors as part of the runnerup NCAA 4 X 400 relay team, finishing third in the 800 meters and taking fifth in the indoor 800 meters. In the outdoor 800, she shattered her own personal best with a 2:01.56, No. 2 all-time at LSU.
Davis in the field for ULM won three major high jump titles, the Sun Belt indoor and outdoor meet and the Mideast Regional Championship in not only winning the honor for the second straight year and ending her career as only the third field athlete in school history to advance to three outdoor championships.
Laurent in her freshman season burst onto the scene as one of the nation’s premier pole vaulters at LSU, becoming to first ever Lady Tigers to be crowned SEC champion on the pole vault. Worthy of Tech took newcomer honors after transferring from San Francisco with strong performances in the WAC championship and as part of an NCAA 4 x 400 relay team.
Shaver’s teams in 2009 combined for four top-six finishes in NCAA competition between the men’s and women’s teams. He coached the Tigers to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Indoors and a fifth at the NCAA Outdoors. He led the Lady Tigers to two sixth place finishes in the two events. The Lady Tigers were runnerups in both the SEC championships.
The top times list shows that for the most part the Louisiana track and field bests were primarily underclassmen as only a handful of seniors earned top three times or distances in their respective events.
