BATON ROUGE — A total of 63 LSU student-athletes were named to the 2009 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll Wednesday as announced by league commissioner Mike Slive.
The track and field program racked up 24 selections highlighted by Rabun Fox, who was recently named an ESPN The Magazine Third-Team Academic All-American. He finished his LSU career ranked No. 4 on the school’s all-time performance list in the hammer throw with a career-best mark of 215 feet, 11 inches. Samantha Henry, a member of the 4×400 All-America relay team, represent the women.
The tennis teams tallied 13 members, including three-time All-American Megan Falcon. She notched a 32-7 record last season before falling in the Round of 16 at the NCAA’s. Her 99 career victories are ranked No. 8 in program history. Michael Venus, who finished inside the ITA Top 10 in both singles and doubles, represent the men.,
The national champion baseball team added 11 players. Ryan Schimpf batted .336 and cranked 22 home runs to go along with 70 RBIs en route to College World Series All-Tournament Team honors. The Covington native also was drafted in the fifth round by the Toronto Blue Jays. Starting catcher Micah Gibbs along with pitchers Paul Bertuccini, Daniel Bradshaw and Austin Ross are on the list.
A pair of All-America Second-Team selections, Megan McChrystal and John Peterson, spotlight the golf program’s 10 picks. McChrystal set an LSU single season stroke average record of 72.69 in her 29 rounds, while Peterson turned in a pair of third-place finishes at the SEC Championships and NCAA South Central Regional.,
The softball team totaled five selections after making its 11th NCAA Regional appearance in 13 seasons. Kirsten Shortridge’s .426 batting average was second-highest for a single-season as the junior picked up NFCA All-America Third-Team accolades. Pitcher Cody Trahan, an All-South Region First-Team performer, in addition to starting infielders Ashley Applegate and Jessica Mouse are on the list.
The 2009 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2008 Spring, Summer and Fall terms.
(1) A student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or above for either the preceding academic year (two semesters or three quarters) or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution.
(2) If a student-athlete attends summer school, his/her grade point average during the summer academic term must be included in the calculation used to determine eligibility for the Academic Honor Roll.
(3) Student-athletes eligible for the Honor Roll include those receiving an athletics scholarship, recipients of an athletics award (i.e., letter winner), and nonscholarship student-athletes who have been on a varsity team for two seasons.
(4) Prior to being nominated, a student-athlete must have successfully completed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of non-remedial academic credit toward a baccalaureate degree at the nominating institution.
(5) The student-athlete must have been a member of a varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.
