Men’s Golfers Sweep State’s Top Honors

BATON ROUGE — LSU’s John Peterson was named the Louisiana men’s college golf of the year on the All-Louisiana College Golf Team announced Sunday by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

A sophomore from Fort Worth, Texas, Peterson posted a 72.37 stroke average for the recent spring season, ranked 24th nationally and earned first-team All-Southeastern Conference honors.

Freshman of the year honors for the men was won by Sang Yi of LSU who had a 73.74 stroke average and named coach of the year was LSU’s Chuck Winstead who led his team to a national No. 16 ranking, to fourth place in the SEC tournament, to three tournament titles and into the NCAA national tournament.

LSU’s Jacqueline Hedwall of the seventh-ranked Lady Tiger women’s team shared the freshman of the year honor along with Tulane’s Daniela Holmqvist. Hedwall had a 74.2 stroke average and was named the SEC’s all-freshman team.

Linn Gustafsson of Tulane was named the women’s state player and newcomer of the year and Tulane’s John Thomas Horton was named the state coach of the year leading the Green Wave to the NCAA championships in their first season back as an official sport since Hurricane Katrina.

Joining Peterson on the men’s first team is teammate Yi, Ken Looper of UNO, Devin Carrey of ULL and Cedric Scotto of Southeastern Louisiana. Second team members are Adam Cornelson and Jose Toledo of UNO, Andrew Loupe of LSU, Matthew Carvell of Southeastern Louisiana and Philipp Fendt of ULL.

After going to the NCAA championships and finishing 12th, all five of the LSU starting quintet earned first or second team honors.

Named to the women’s first team along with Gustafsson were teammate Holmqvist and LSU’s Megan McChrystal, Jacqueline Hedwall and Amalie Valle. Second team members are Janine Fellows and Samantha Troyanovich of Tulane, Tessa Teachman and Caroline Martens of LSU and Maggie Welch of McNeese State.
