BATON ROUGE — Pitcher Louis Coleman of LSU and first baseman Justin O’Neal of Northwestern State were named Tuesday as the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Baseball Players of the Week.
Coleman, a senior right-hander from Schlater, Miss, was named Pitcher of the Week as he recorded another brilliant outing in a win over ninth-ranked Florida Saturday, increasing his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 17.
Coleman fired eight shutout innings against the Gators, allowing just four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Coleman (10-2) leads the SEC in wins, ERA (2.45) and opponent batting average (.205). In 84.1 innings this season, he has recorded 18 walks and 99 strikeouts.
O’Neal, a senior from Ruston, La., was named Hitter of the Week as he blasted three home runs and knocked in 11 as he helped the Demons go 3-1 for the week, including their second straight three-game SLC series sweep. In Game 2 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, O’Neal went 2-for-3 and knocked in seven runs ? one short of tying the school record.
O’Neal extended his hitting streak to a career-best 10 games after hitting safely in all four games. He also hit home runs in three consecutive games.
