BROWNS SUMMITT, N.C. — The ninth-ranked LSU Lady Tigers couldn’t match their first-round success but did post a good number that still gives them a sizeable lead heading into Sunday’s final round of the Bryan Park Collegiate championship.
The Lady Tigers, looking for their second team title of the season, posted a 14-over 302 and stands at 16-over 592 for the first 36-holes of the 54-hole event. LSU, up 14 after the first round, still has a nine-shot advantage over now No. 13 North Carolina and 10 over No. 11 Wake Forest. No. 3 Virginia, the winner of the LSU Golf Classic in Baton Rouge last month, fell from second to fourth at 604, 12 shots back.
LSU had to play in the worst of the wind conditions that they missed a bit of in Friday’s first round, but still is in a strong position of playing from ahead and will be paired with the second and third place teams in Sunday’s shotgun start.
“We didn’t get the breaks and good things like we did on Friday,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen, “but I like where we are and with everyone playing at the same time and a little earlier on Sunday, we will all be dealing with the same conditions. The girls are confident and eager to do well in the final round and see what happens.”
LSU still has three players in the top 10 and all are in contention for the individual title of the event that is now led by Wake Forest’s Nannette Hill, who followed Friday’s 75 with a four-under 68 in the final round to stand at one-under 213. She is two-shots of first-round leader LSU sophomore Tessa Teachman who is at one-over 215. Teachman, who fired 68 on Friday, posted a five-over 77 with a little bit of everything that included an eagle on the par-4 second and a triple-bogey on par 3 14th hole. Teachman is tied for second with Catherine O’Donnell of North Carolina (73-72).
LSU sophomore Megan McChrystal is right behind in a tie for fourth at two-over 146 after rounds of 73-73, while LSU’s other freshman, Jacqueline Hedwall, remains in a tie for seventh at five-over 149 after rounds of 75-74.
Caroline Martens and Amalie Valle both shot six-over rounds of 78. Martens is in a group tied for 13th at 152, eight over par.
This will be the final round of the spring season on Sunday for LSU before beginning post-season play in the Southeastern Conference Women’s Championship in two weekends outside Columbia, S.C.
