BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southeastern Conference released its 2008-09 SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll Wednesday and a total of 35 Tiger Student-Athletes were on the list.
“We at the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes are extremely proud of this semester’s honorees,” Cox Communications Academic Center Executive Director Kenneth Miles said. “They are a true representation of what it means to be a LSU Tiger.”
LSU’s swimming teams headlined the list with 14 women and 12 men represented. The Lady Tigers tallied 16th place finish at the NCAA Championships last month, its highest finish since the 2001 season. Two members of the First-Team All-America 200-yard medley relay team, Jane Trepp and Katie Gilmore, highlight the list.
On the men’s side, Julius Gloeckner was a part of 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle along with the 400-yard medley that earned Honorable Mention All-America status. Christoph Lubenau joined Gloecker on the 400-yard relays and tacked on All-America status in the 100-yard butterfly, while fellow German Hannes Heyl took part of the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay teams.
Five members of the gymnastics squad that turned in the program’s second consecutive “Super Six” appearance made the list, including Ashley Clare-Kearney who became the first Tiger in program history to win two NCAA individual championships last weekend.
Fresh off NCAA Tournament Second Round appearances both Tiger basketball teams added two members. Garrett Temple averaged 7.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game en route to All-SEC Coaches and All-Louisiana Second-Team honors.
Allison Hightower paced the Lady Tigers with 14.9 points and dished out 90 assists racking up All-SEC Coaches and Media First-Team selections. She also picked up Honorable Mention All-America and was named Louisiana Player of the Year.
The 2008 SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2008 Spring, Summer and Fall terms. To be named to the Academic Honor Roll a student-athlete must meet the following criteria:
(1) A student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or above for either the preceding academic year (two semesters or three quarters) or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution.
(2) If a student-athlete attends summer school, his/her grade point average during the summer academic term must be included in the calculation used to determine eligibility for the Academic Honor Roll.
(3) Student-athletes eligible for the Honor Roll include those receiving an athletic scholarship, recipients of an athletics award (i.e., letter winner), and non-scholarship student-athletes who have been on a varsity team for two seasons.
(4) Prior to being nominated, a student-athlete must have successfully completed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of non-remedial academic credit toward a baccalaureate degree at the nominating institution.
(5) The student-athlete must have been a member of a varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.
