BATON ROUGE — Track and field sophomore Walter Henning and softball freshman Juliana Santos were named LSU Male and Female Student-Athletes of the week this week.
Henning, a thrower from King’s Park, N.Y., recorded an NCAA-leading hammer throw of 235 feet, 5 inches to win the event at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz., last weekend. His mark is also a new personal best by 10 feet and breaks the previous LSU record by more than 13 feet.
No competitor came within 11 feet of Henning’s throw, which leads the NCAA by just two inches over the previous leader, Marcel Lomnicky from Virginia Tech.
Santos hit safely in all four games for the Tigers last week, posting a .429 batting average with four RBIs and five runs scored. Down 1-0 in the seventh inning against Nicholls St. on April 7, Santos smashed a game-tying pinch-hit triple and scored the winning run on the next batter.
In a weekend series against Arkansas, the California native posted two multi-hit games, including a two-run single in the second inning of game three to start the scoring for the Tigers.

The track and field team will stay home this weekend as it hosts the Combined events on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. and Friday at noon, and the Alumni Gold on Saturday at 2:45 p.m.
