Golfer McChrystal Named College Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU sophomore women’s golf Megan McChrystal, off a rallying win this past Sunday in the Bryant Park National Collegiate Championship, has been named GolfWorld magazine’s national College Player of the Week.

Four birdies over the final nine holes gave McChrystal of Stuart, Fla., a closing 69 to claim medalist honors by two strokes at Bryan Park in Brown Summit, N. C. McChrystal posted rounds of 73-73-69 to finish at one-under 215 as she also helped the Lady Tigers win their second tournament title of the 2008-09 season.

McChrystal became the seventh golfer in the 30-year history of the LSU women’s program to record at least two individual titles in their LSU careers. She enters next week’s Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championship with a stroke average of just over 72, well ahead of the best single season stroke average in school history.

McChrystal also captured the Central District Invitational in mid-February with a 54-hole total of three-under 213.

LSU with its win last week is now eighth in the GolfStat performance rankings, moving up one spot from ninth. LSU is one of three SEC teams in the top 10 with Alabama sixth, Auburn in seventh and LSU eighth.

In the GolfWorld/NGCA Division I Coaches’ Poll, the third of the spring season released Thursday, the LSU women remain 10th in that poll with Auburn remaining sixth and Alabama seventh.

LSU travels to the SEC Women’s Golf Championship, April 17-19, in Columbia, S.C.
