BATON ROUGE — Baseball pitcher Matty Ott and softball outfielder Rachel Mitchell were named LSU Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Week this week.

Ott, a freshman right-hander from Metairie, La., picked up a win and two saves in four appearances last week, allowing only one hit in 6.1 shutout innings. He didn’t walk a batter while recording 10 strikeouts and holding opponents to a .050 batting average.

Ott’s win came against Northwestern State last Tuesday and his saves came against McNeese St. on March 18 and South Carolina on Sunday.

Ott was also named SEC and LSWA pitcher of the week.

Mitchell, a junior from Laporte, Texas, batted .353 last week, recording 11 of the team’s 22 RBIs. Five of her six hits produced runs for the Tigers, who swept doubleheaders against then-No. 2 Alabama and Mississippi State.

Mitchell hit a game-tying, three-run double to tie the game in the fifth inning of the second game against Alabama. Against the Bulldogs, she smacked a three-run home run in the first game and hit a go-ahead double in game two.

Mitchell was also named the NFCA National Player of the Week, the fifth time a Tiger has earned the honor.
