BATON ROUGE — Junior forward Amanda Carreno scored a pair of goals while adding an assist to lead the LSU soccer team to a 3-0 shutout of in-state rival Southeastern Louisiana in its one and only home match of the spring exhibition season at the LSU Soccer Complex on Wednesday.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 3-0-1 on the spring season with just three games remaining in the schedule. They have also defeated nationally-ranked Oklahoma State (3-0) and Southern Miss (1-0), while playing SEC Western Division rival Mississippi State to a 1-1 draw.
LSU scored all three of its goals in the first half while playing with the wind gusting to 30 mph as severe thunderstorms made their way to Baton Rouge.
Carreno put the Tigers on the board with her first goal of the match in the 17th minute of play. She snuck a shot inside the right post from the right side of the penalty area following a slotted through ball off the foot of junior all-conference midfielder Melissa Clarke. Junior defender Nikki Bush also assisted on the goal with a serve to Clarke near the top of the box.
LSU wasted little time in extending its advantage to 2-0 when junior forward Rachel Yepez rifled a shot inside the far post from 10 yards out in the left side of the area following a precise cross by Carreno in the 19th minute of the first half. It was Yepez’s second goal of the spring season.
Carreno then provided the final margin in the 41st minute of play by ripping a free kick in the top-left corner of the goal after the Lady Lions were whistled for a foul near the top of the box.
Freshman All-American goalkeeper Mo Isom faced six shots on the night while making a pair of saves to earn her third shutout of the spring. The Tigers outshot the Lady Lions on the night by a count of 19-6, including a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. LSU also forced the Lady Lion keeper to make seven saves. Each team attempted a total of four corner kicks in 90 minutes of action.
The Tigers will make the trip to College Station, Texas, next weekend to square off against BYU and Texas A&M in a double header at the Aggie Soccer Stadium on April 4. They will then wrap up the spring exhibition season with a match against Auburn in Orange Beach, Ala., on April 18.
