COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The LSU men’s tennis team returns to the road as the Tigers travel to take on the No. 15 Texas A&M Aggies in a 1 p.m. CDT match at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
LSU (6-5, 1-3 SEC) hits the road after a home victory against 27th-ranked South Florida on Wednesday by a 4-3 mark.
“Texas A&M is one of the hottest teams in the nation right now having upset Illinois and Southern Cal,” LSU head coach Jeff Brown said. “The team is starting to feel better after going 2-3 in our last matches and finding a way to get it done. We hope to continue good form on Saturday and there are some good match-ups in both singles and doubles.”
Texas A&M (7-5, 0-0 Big 12) leads LSU in the all-time series by a narrow 20-17 margin, however, in the last meeting between the two, it was LSU that emerged victorious. In 2008, then 15th-ranked LSU defeated 25th-rankedTexas A&M by 5-2 mark in Baton Rouge.
This year, both teams carry ranked singles players and duos into the match.
Ninth-ranked LSU senior Michael Venus, 5-5, and 16th-ranked Texas A&M senior Connor Pollock, 6-5, lead the teams in the singles rankings. In last year’s match the two squared off in a three-set showdown. Then 70th-ranked rose to upset 27th-ranked Pollock, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, and clinched the match for the Tigers.
In addition to Pollock, Texas A&M holds two other nationally-ranked singles players in 30th-ranked Will Spencer and 52nd-ranked Austin Krajicek.
In doubles both LSU and Texas A&M feature top-12 tandems. No. 3 Pollok and Krajicek lead the Aggies with a 10-1 record and No. 12 Venus and Neal Skupski hold an 8-3 record for LSU.
