BATON ROUGE — Pitcher Louis Coleman of LSU and shortstop Ben Soignier of Louisiana-Monroe were named Tuesday as the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Baseball Players of the Week.
Coleman, a senior right-hander from Schlater, Miss. was named Pitcher of the Week as he posted two victories over Kentucky to lead LSU to an SEC series victory. In two appearances vs. UK (one start), Coleman was 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA in 9.2 innings, allowing just one run on five hits with no walks and 11 strikeouts.
Coleman earned the win in relief on Friday night, limiting the Wildcats to no runs on one hit in 2.2 innings with no walks and four strikeouts. He returned as the starting pitcher in the final game of the series on Sunday (a seven-inning contest), and he recorded a complete-game victory, allowing one run on four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
Coleman also made a relief appearance against Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday, working two shutout innings with five strikeouts. On the year, the right-hander is 4-1 with a 0.40 ERA in 22.2 innings, recording four walks and 32 strikeouts.
Soignier, a senior from West Monroe, La., was named Hitter of the Week as he batted .444 with four doubles, a home run and six RBI as the Warhawks went 4-1, including a three-game sweep of New Orleans.
Soignier went 2-for-4 in the last four games of the week; in the opener he was 0-for-2 but walked four times. He finished the week with an .833 slugging percentage and an 1.146 on-base percentage. He also stole a base during the week and scored six runs.
