BATON ROUGE — Shortstop DJ LeMahieu of LSU and pitcher Jimmy Heard of Northwestern State were named Tuesday as the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Baseball Players of the Week.

LeMahieu, a sophomore from Bloomfield Hills, Mich., was named Hitter of the Week as he batted .667 (10-for-15) in four games with two doubles, two homers, seven RBI, 10 runs and two stolen bases. In the Tigers’ three-game sweep of UCF, LeMahieu hit .700 (7-for-10) with one double, two homers, six RBI, eight runs and one steal.

LeMahieu leads the Tigers in cumulative batting average, hitting .625 (15-for-24) on the year with two doubles, three triples, two homers, 10 RBI, 12 runs and two stolen bases.

Heard, a senior right-hander from Bossier City, La., was named Pitcher of the Week as he was one strikeout away from tying a school record when he recorded 14 Ks while tossing eight shutout innings in a 16-0 win over Houston Baptist on Friday. 

Heard gave up just five hits and only walked one batter in throwing 115 pitches.  He only allowed one batter to advance beyond second base. Heard retired nine consecutive batters between the second and fifth innings.
