McChrystal, Schimpf Named Student-Athletes of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU baseball second-baseman Ryan Schimpf and women’s golfer Megan McChrystal were named LSU Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Week this week.

McChrystal posted a four-under 68 in the final round to win the Central District Invitational last week. Tied for the lead with Auburn’s Candace Shepperle in the final hole of the tournament, McChrsytal chipped in for birdie from 45 feet to secure a one-stroke victory. She finished the tournament at three under par, earning the first individual title for an LSU women’s golfer since 2002.

She also earned National Golfer of the Week honors from Golf Week Magazine earlier this week.

Led by 10th-ranked McChrystal, the women’s golf team, now no. 12 in the country, will next travel to Orlando, Fla., to compete in the UCF Invitation March 8-10 and will then host the LSU Golf Classic the following weekend, March 13-15.

Schimpf led the baseball team to a sweep in the opening weekend of the new Alex Box Stadium by batting .700 in a three-game sweep over Villanova last weekend.

The junior second-basemen finished the weekend with two doubles, one home run, six RBI and three runs scored. He also walked four times, stole four bases and recorded a .786 on-base percentage and 1.200 slugging percentage.

Following an 11-5 win over Southern University Wednesday night, the baseball team will next host the University of Central Florida in a three game series at Alex Box Stadium beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
