BATON ROUGE — LSU swimmer Julius Gloeckner was honored as the Southeastern Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the sport of swimming and diving, the league office announced Tuesday.
Since his arrival from Freiburg, Germany in 2005, Gloeckner has shined both in the pool and in the classroom as the versatile senior has arguably impacted the mens program more than any other swimmer in head coach Adam Schmitts five-year tenure while also earning an impressive 3.596 cumulative grade point average in finance.
A three-time NCAA All-American, Gloeckner currently owns more individual school records than any other athlete in program history, shattering three program marks in the 200- and 400-yard individual medleys and the 200-yard butterfly as a sophomore in 2006-07 and claiming his fourth mark this season at last weeks SEC Championships.
Leading off the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 1 minute, 36.09 seconds, the German broke the program record in the 200 freestyle and helped his squad achieve a new relay mark at LSU.
In addition, Gloeckner led this year’s team with 16 individual victories in dual-meet competition and has received SEC Academic Honor Roll recognition in every season of his career.
