Baseball’s Schimpf Named SEC Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU second baseman Ryan Schimpf was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week Monday by the league office.

Schimpf, a junior from Covington, La., enjoyed an exceptional weekend for the top-ranked Tigers in their season-opening sweep of Villanova at Alex Box Stadium.

Schimpf batted .700 (7-for-10) in the series with two doubles, one homer, six RBI and three runs scored. He walked four times and stole four bases while recording a .786 on-base percentage and a 1.200 slugging percentage.

Monday’s honor marked the second career SEC Player of the Week designation for Schimpf, who also received the award in May 2008 after leading LSU to a sweep of Mississippi State.

No. 1 LSU (3-0) returns to action at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday when the Tigers play host to Southern University (1-2) in Alex Box Stadium.
