Pre-season all-American right-hander Louis Coleman earned the victory in LSU’s season opener Friday, limiting Villanova to just two hits in five scoreless innings with two walks and eight strikeouts, tying his career high in Ks … Coleman helped open the New Alex Box Stadium in grand fashion, striking out the side in the top of the first inning.

Top-ranked LSU opened the 2009 season with a three-game sweep of Villanova in the New Alex Box Stadium … the new stadium played host to its first game on Friday, a 12-3 LSU victory over Villanova … the first game in the new facility was played before 9,054 fans, the largest home baseball crowd in LSU history … junior second baseman Ryan Schimpf enjoyed an exceptional weekend for the Tigers, as he batted .700 (7-for-10) with two doubles, one homer and six RBI … Schimpf scored three runs, walked four times and stole four bases, recording a .786 on-base percentage and a 1.200 slugging percentage … sophomore shortstop DJ LeMahieu hit .556 (5-for-9) in the series with three triples, three RBI and two runs scored … LeMahieu collected two triples in Sunday’s win over Villanova, becoming the first LSU player to hit two triples in a game since 1999, when Jeff Leaumont had a pair of triples against Kentucky … sophomore centerfielder Leon Landry — the Tigers’ lead-off hitter ? blasted two homers in Saturday’s win over the Wildcats, marking the first two-homer game of his collegiate career … pre-season all-American right-hander Louis Coleman earned the victory in the season opener, limiting Villanova to just two hits in five scoreless innings with two walks and eight strikeouts, tying his career high in Ks … LSU received outstanding relief efforts on Saturday and Sunday from right-handers Daniel Bradshaw and Paul Bertuccini … Bradshaw was credited with a save in Saturday’s 11-1 victory, as he blanked Villanova over the final three innings … Bradshaw allowed just one hit while recording no walks and five strikeouts … Bertuccini picked up a save on Sunday, working the final 1.2 innings of LSU’s 6-3 win … Bertuccini did not allow a hit and recorded three strikeouts, including one in the top of the eighth with two outs and the bases loaded and LSU holding a 5-3 lead.
