BATON ROUGE — The LSU volleyball and soccer teams took a break from their offseason conditioning programs to serve the Baton Rouge community over the weekend.
Tiger volleyball spent its Valentine’s Day morning visiting patients at the children’s ward of a local hospital. The entire team passed out Valentine’s Day cards and heart stickers to all the patients.
“We really enjoyed seeing all the kids and wishing them a Happy Valentine’s Day,” sophomore right side hitter Brittney Johnson said. “We feel really good about putting smiles on their faces.”
Both teams were on-hand Sunday to help out at the Civitan Mardi Gras Dance for the mentally challenged. They served food and drinks to the participants in addition to taking the dance floor with them. The team also handed out beads and stuffed animals.
“It feels great to give back to the community that supports us so much,” defender Chelsea Potts said. “The excitement on their faces when we were throwing beads made it worth way more than a couple hours of our time.”
Soccer begins its spring exhibition schedule on Feb. 28 in Austin, Texas, against the reigning Big 12 Conference regular season champion Oklahoma State Cowgirls, while volleyball heads to the Rice Spring Tournament one month later on March 28.
