BATON ROUGE — Men’s basketball junior Tasmin Mitchell and gymnastics senior Ashleigh Clare-Kearney were named LSU Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Week this week.
Mitchell helped lead the Tigers to SEC wins at Georgia and home against Alabama in the past week. He posted 27 points and nine rebounds in a 80-62 win over the Bulldogs and followed it with his sixth double-double of the season in a 76-62 win over the Tide. In that game, Mitchell had one of his best all-around performances of the season scoring 16 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and finishing with four assists and four steals. His efforts also earned him SEC Player of the Week honors on Feb. 9. He is averaging 15.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game this season.
The Tigers are currently first overall in the SEC with a 7-1 conference record, 19-4 overall, and will travel to Starkville, Miss. to face the Mississippi State Bulldogs Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Clare-Kearney led Gymnastics to a season-high all-around score and an upset win over 8th-ranked Florida, 196.800 ? 195.825. Battling bronchitis and an upper respiratory infection, she posted season-high scores on beam (9.875), floor (9.975) and all-around (39.625). Her score on the floor is the highest score this season in the SEC.
Clare-Kearney captured individual titles on the floor and the all-around, giving her 97 for her career. She goes for 100 career titles Friday at 7:30 p.m. as the Tigers travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to take on No.5 Alabama.
