BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southeastern Conference released its 2008 SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll Wednesday and a total of 27 Tiger Student-Athletes were on the list.

“We, at the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes, are extremely proud of this year’s honorees. They have exhibited the duality of what it means to be a student and what is means to be an athlete through their devoted work,” Cox Communications Academic Center Executive Director Kenneth Miles said. “Their discovery of this balance is will likely catapult them into positions of greater success in the future. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to applaud them not only for what they have achieved now but for what they will become.”

The Tiger football team headlined the list of teams with 15 players on the Honor Roll, including defensive end Rahim Alem and tight end Caleb Angelle, who already earned their degrees last December. Tight end Richard Dickson also was on the list after ranking third on the team, hauling in 31 receptions for 324 yards and five touchdowns.

Seven members of the SEC Western Division Co-Champions women’s soccer team that finished 14-4-2 with its second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth made the list. Three of the team’s top four scorers, Roslyn Jones, Rachel Yepez and Michelle Makasini, were among the honorees.

Five players from LSU’s volleyball team earned spots on the Honor Roll as the program won its fourth straight SEC Western Division crown in addition to appearing its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament. Libero Elena Martinez reeled in 516 digs en route to her second straight SEC Defensive Player of the Year and AVCA All-American Honorable Mention accolades.

(2) If a student-athlete attends summer school, his/her grade point average during the summer academic term must be included in the calculation used to determine eligibility for the Academic Honor Roll.

(3) Student-athletes eligible for the Honor Roll include those receiving an athletic scholarship, recipients of an athletics award (i.e., letter winner), and non-scholarship student-athletes who have been on a varsity team for two seasons.

(4) Prior to being nominated, a student-athlete must have successfully completed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of non-remedial academic credit toward a baccalaureate degree at the nominating institution.
