Venus Falls in Semifinal Tiebreakers at SEC Indoors

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Senior Michael Venus of the LSU men’s tennis team highlighted the Southeastern Conference Coaches’ Indoor Championships as the tournament ended on Monday, marking a 3-1 record for the tournament.

Top-seeded Venus posted wins against Kentucky’s Graeme Dyce, Ole Miss’ Chris Thiemann and Mississippi State’s Louis Cant before falling in a close match to Florida’s Carlos Gonzalez de Cueto in the semifinals of the singles bracket.

As Venus and Cueto squared off in the semifinals, Cueto marked a first-set win by a close 7-6 (7) margin. Venus fell to Cueto after a heated second set in which Cueto posted a 7-6 (6) mark and advanced to the final.

“Michael played with great effort today, but came up a little short,” LSU assistant coach Danny Bryan said. “You have to give credit to his opponent who played great in both tiebreakers.”

LSU’s next matches will be at the Auburn Invitational slated to begin Jan. 23 at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
