Mitchell Named LSWA Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — Undefeated weeks and strong play helped bring Louisiana Sports Writers Association basketball Player of the Week honors to three players announced on Tuesday.

Tasmin Mitchell of LSU and Kevyn Green of Southeastern Louisiana shared the men’s honor in a split vote, while Brittany Powell of Xavier of New Orleans was named the women’s player of the week.

Green helped Southeastern climb above the .500 mark on the season with a 2-0 record, including its first road win of the season. The Portland, Ore., product averaged 22.5 points and four rebounds while shooting 53 percent from the floor and 43 percent from behind the three-point line. Green had a game-high 25 in a win at Southern University last week and scored 20 points in the Lions’ 108-51 win over Southern-New Orleans, the fourth largest margin of victory in school history. Green has now scored 20 or more points in five of seven games this season.

Mitchell in LSU’s only game last week recorded his first double double of the year, the ninth of his career. The Denham Springs junior had 16 points and a career high 15 rebounds in the 84-63 win over Cal State Fullerton that ran LSU’s record to 6-0, the last unbeaten team in the SEC. Mitchell also had four assists, a career high tying three blocks and also tied his career mark for free throws made with eight in 36 minutes.

On the women’s side, Powell had a dominating week averaging 21.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots in Xavier’s 2-0 week. The junior forward shot 62 percent from the floor and 78 percent from the line.  She scored a career-high 25 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots in an 80-64 win at Wiley, Xavier’s biggest winning margin on an opponent’s floor since November 2004. Powell had 18 points and a season high 12 rebounds with four blocks in a 74-57 win against Paul Quinn as Xavier ran its record to 7-1, No. 18 in the NAIA Division I poll.
