CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Michael Venus of the LSU men’s tennis team edged out No. 34 Clancy Shields of Boise State on Thursday in a three-set match to advance to the round of 16 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Virginia.
“Mike did a good job of finding a way to win today.” LSU assistant coach Danny Bryan said. “He is looking forward to getting back on the court tomorrow.”
After a heated first set, Venus pulled ahead, earning a 7-6 (3) mark over Shields. Shields made a valiant run in the second set, claiming a 6-3 mark over Venus, who answered Shields’ run in a close third set. The 6-3 LSU senior claimed the third set with a 7-6 (6) mark and with the victory advanced into the second round of tournament play.
In the round of 16, Venus is set to face No. 6 Arnau Brugues from the University of Tulsa. The two will square off in match slated for 2:30 p.m. at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
