BATON ROUGE — Senior Megan Falcon of the LSU women’s tennis team captured two wins at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championships on Friday while two other Lady Tigers picked up wins at the SEC Coaches Classic at Alabama.
Falcon, ranked No. 15 nationally, defeated Southern California’s Alison Ramos, 6-2, 6-2, in the consolation round of 16 before cruising past Northwestern’s 11th-ranked Georgia Rose in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
“Megan competed great today,” LSU assistant coach Lisa Jackson said. “I’m proud of how she was able to respond after a tough match in singles the day before. Hopefully she can carry over her great play in singles and doubles tomorrow.”
Eleventh-ranked Falcon and Mykala Hedberg fell in the quarterfinal round to Arkansas’ Nanar Airapetian and Anouk Tigu, 8-4, but the duo will compete on Saturday in the consolation bracket.
In Tuscaloosa at the SEC Classic, Nicole Kantor and Nicole Smith each won a singles match. Kantor defeated South Carolina’s Ashley Miller, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, in the consolation semifinal of the Gold Draw, and Smith beat Mississippi State’s Natalia Mayuk, 6-4, 6-2, in the consolation semifinal of the Blue Draw.
“Kantor and Smith showed a lot of toughness, especially Kantor because she played two doubles matches before competing in singles,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “All three fought hard today, and that is important if we are going to be successful tomorrow.”
Both tournaments will begin day three action on Saturday at 9 a.m. CST.
