No. 16 Women’s Golf Tees Off at Mercedes-Benz

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The 16th-ranked LSU women’s golf team resumes play for the first time in a month when it begins play here Friday in the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships.

The 54-hole event, which runs through Sunday, will be played at the Fox Den Country Club. The course will play to a par 72 over the 6,058-yard layout.

Along with LSU and host Tennessee, the field includes Arkansas, Central Florida, Chattanooga, Denver, Furman, Indiana State, Kent State, Kentucky, Louisville, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, SMU, Texas A&M and Tulane.

Denver, who placed seventh a year ago, comes to Knoxville as the highest ranked team in the field at No. 9 in the Golfweek rankings with two players in the top 20 in the Sagarin individual rankings. LSU was ninth in the field a year ago after shooting a 36-over par total of 888.

LSU in its opening event of the year finished sixth in its opening event at the College of Charleston at 14-over 878. Sophomore Megan McChrystal and freshman Jacqueline Hedwall both tied for 14th place in the opening tournament with a 54-hole score of 217, one over par.

LSU’s lineup for the event will include McChrystal and Hedwall along with Lindy LaBavue, Nicole Crochet and senior Caroline Martens, making her season debut. Also making her debut in an individual role in this tournament will be Baton Rouge freshman, Tessa Teachman.

“We are happy to be in another tournament,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “The weather has been great the last few weeks so we have had the time to work on our game and hopefully we will be able to get a good start and get a score posted that will put us in position.”
