ADELAIDE, Australia — LSU sophomore Amalie Valle is part of the trio of golfers representing Norway in the World Amateur Team Championships that began Wednesday Australia time here at the Grange Golf Club East and West Courses.
The 48 countries represented are playing the biennial competition for the Espirito Santo Trophy that goes to the winning country.
The Norwegian team, in a format where teams count two of three 18-hole player scores, is in a tie for 30th after the first day at 10-over par. Norway played the West Course that plays to a par 72 and is 6,149 yards long. Valle struggled at the end of her round, playing the last three holes in four over par to finish with an eight-over 80.
The team counted rounds of three over 75 from Tonje Daffinrud and 79 from Rachel Raastad who plays for TCU.
The American team of Tiffany Joh, Alison Walshe and Amanda Blumenherst is tied for 17th at 152 which is six-over par based on the par on the 6,260 yard West Course of 73. Joh, a senior at UCLA, shot 74, one over, for the Americans.
The leaders thoroughly dominated the West Course as Sweden posted a nine-under based on a par of 146. Caroline Hedwall, the twin sister of LSU women’s golfer Jacqueline Hedwall, is the individual leader after shooting six-under 67.
The tournament runs through Saturday.
