BATON ROUGE — LSU will go through its second scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday as the Tigers continue to prepare for their season opener against Appalachian State in two weeks.

LSU coach Les Miles said the Tigers are expected to go over 100 plays on Saturday with the first and second units getting the bulk of the action. The scrimmage will be “thud-live” as both the offense and defense will be at full speed with the exception of tackling to the ground.

In preparation for the scrimmage, Miles scaled back on Friday’s two workouts. The team held a full-pad practice on Friday morning followed by a walk-thru in shorts and helmets indoors during the afternoon session.

Miles surprised the team with watermelon following the first practice on Friday followed by a trip to the swimming pool at LSU’s Student Recreation Center after the second workout.

“It’s going to be a fast-paced, non-tackling scrimmage that will have us working on all phases of the game, including kicking, punting, kickoff and field goals,” Miles said. “We are going to go over every situation and have it as game-like as possible from our pre-game routine to the attention to detail that we are looking for during warm-ups.

“I’m looking for progress along all three lines ? offense, defense and special teams. I expect it to be very physical, which is one reason we scaled things back a little bit (Friday). This scrimmage will be a good report card as to where we stand at this point in camp.”

Miles said that redshirt freshman quarterback Jarrett Lee will take part on Saturday after missing the first scrimmage earlier this week with a “soft-tissue” injury in his leg.

Following Saturday’s workout, the Tigers will take Sunday off as the team officially breaks camp. LSU resumes practice on Monday as the team goes to a one-a-day practice schedule until the start of the season.

LSU’s final pre-season scrimmage will come on Tuesday afternoon in Tiger Stadium.
