EUGENE, Ore. — LSU sophomore Megan McChrystal lost two holes late in her second match of the day Thursday in the United States Women’s Amateur Championship at the Eugene Country Club ending her bid for the title in the round of 16.
McChrystal lost 2-and-1 to Chelsea Stelzmiller, a freshman at UC Davis, after McChrystal won 3-and-2 earlier in the day in the round of 32 against Julia Potter, a junior at Missouri, from Granger, Ind.
The all square round of 16 match turned on the 15th hole, when Stelzmiller of Placerville, Calif., birdied the hole while McChrystal pared. The match ended on the 342-yard 17th hole when McChrystal had a bogey on the hole while Stelzmiller posted a par to win the match.
McChrystal jumped out early in match, getting a 2-up advantage after three holes as the Stuart, Fla., native pared the first three holes while Stelzmiller was bogeying the second and third holes. A bogey by McChrystal on the par-3 fifth dropped her advantage to 1UP which stayed until the ninth when McChrystal bogeyed the par four, 466-yard hole, while Stelzmiller posted a birdie three to square the match.
In her round of 32 match, McChrystal was able to end the match on the 16th hole when another par 5 came up big for her as she pared the 485-yard hole while Potter bogeyed to get the winning 3 and 2 advantage.
McChrystal was only down once in the morning match and that came early as Potter posted a par 4 on the fourth hole while McChrystal bogeyed to give Potter a 1-up advantage. That lasted only one hole as McChrystal posted a par three on the 187 yard fifth hole while Potter posted a double bogey five.
McChrystal took the lead for good on the very next hole, the par-5 sixth with a birdie to Potter’s par and extended the lead to 2-up on the par-4 11th with a par to Potter’s bogey and that’s where the match stayed until McChrystal closed the match out on the 16th. For the round, McChrystal was two-over on her winning card.
