McChrystal Advances to US Women’s Amateur Match Play

EUGENE,  Ore. — LSU women’s golfer Megan McChrystal fired two solid rounds Monday and Tuesday and will advance to match play Wednesday in the prestigious 108th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at the Eugene Country Club.

McChrystal, who will be a sophomore for the Lady Tigers this fall after leading the team in stroke average as a freshman, fired rounds of 1-over 73 and 2-over 74 to easily make the field of 64 for match play from an original field of 155 over the par-72, 6,484-yard layout.

With the field still playing late in the day on the West Coast, McChrystal of Stuart, Fla., was in a group tied for 21st at 3-over 147. It appears that there will be a playoff for the final spots in the field as several more than 64 players are at 8-over or better.

The former Duke star Amanda Blumenhurst had the first-round lead at 6-under 66, but after a 2-over 74 on Tuesday is tied for the medalist honors at 4-under 140 with Stephanie Na of Australia.

The women’s amateur will be covered on The Golf Channel (Cox Digital Cable 250) beginning with the first round of match play, beginning at 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday. Coverage is scheduled each day at 3 p.m. through Saturday with the final Sunday at 4 p.m. CDT.

Former LSU player and now LPGA member Meredith Duncan of Shreveport won the Amateur in a one-hole playoff after the match was all square after 36 holes in 2001.
