BATON ROUGE — LSU sophomore centerfielder Leon Landry has emerged this summer as one of the top players in the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League headquartered in Maryland.

The Cal Ripken Sr. League , which began in 2005, is a wooden-bat league featuring top collegiate players from all over the country. The league is community-oriented, as the teams run camps to instruct young players and conduct fundraisers to benefit baseball and softball programs throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Landry, a product of Baker (La.) High School, participated in Tuesday’s CRSCBL All-Star Game, representing the Youse’s Maryland Orioles.  He  is batting .327 (17-for-52) in 16 games for the Orioles with four doubles, one triple, 11 RBI, 14 runs and four steals in four attempts.

Landry, one of three true freshmen in LSU’s 2008 everyday starting lineup, batted .271 (58-for-214) for the Tigers last season with 10 doubles, five triples, five homers, 26 RBI, 38 runs and 12 stolen bases.

Landry’s outstanding defensive play in center field was also a major factor in LSU’s surge to the SEC Western Division title, the SEC Tournament championship and a berth in the College World Series.
