OMAHA, Neb. — LSU swimmer Stephanie Cota participated in her third event of the 2008 United States Olympic Trials Tuesday, competing in the women’s 200-meter freestyle at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb.
Cota, who swam in the 100m butterfly and 400m IM on the trials’ opening day, is scheduled to wrap up her stay in Omaha with the 200m butterfly Wednesday. The junior qualified for the race with a time of 2:11.91.
Day 4 of the Olympic Trials will begin Wednesday at 11 a.m. CT with the preliminary heats of the men’s 100m freestyle, the women’s 200m fly and the men’s 200m breaststroke. The semifinal and final rounds will start at 6:45 p.m. CT.
Live streaming video of the prelims will be available on NBC’s official Olympic Web site (www.NBCOlympics.com). The finals can be seen on the USA network (Channel 27 in Baton Rouge) at 7 p.m. CT.

Two more world records fell Tuesday as the world’s premier backstrokers topped their own marks. Natalie Coughlin swam the 100m back final in 58.97 seconds to shatter the previous record of 59.03 she set just one day ago in the prelims. Aaron Peirsol exceeded his record-setting time of 52.98 seconds with a blistering mark of 52.89.
Margaret Hoelzer and Matt Grevers took runner-up honors in their respective 100m backstroke finals to clinch Olympic berths. Jessica Hardy emerged victorious in the 100m breaststroke to earn a roster spot, and Megan Jendrick finished second behind Hardy to notch a trip to Beijing, China.
Michael Phelps qualified for his third event in Beijing with a U.S. record time of 1:44.10 in the 200m free.
