The transformation to LSU is complete for coach Paul Mainieri.
When LSU officials approached their Notre Dame counterparts after the 2006 season with hopes of luring Mainieri to Baton Rouge, his decision wasn’t easy. Mainieri was comfortable at Notre Dame, but also was well aware of the baseball tradition at LSU.
Mainieri struggled with the decision, but in the end, he decided to join a program that can be a pressure-cooker because of high expectations.
In his first season with the Tigers, Mainieri didn’t completely feel as if he was a part of the LSU family, but the feeling is much different after Year Two. He is loving his time at LSU, and he’s also the 2008 Rivals.com National Coach of the Year.
“It’s such an honor to be named the National Coach of the Year by Rivals.com, which does such a great service for college baseball,” Mainieri said. “Now that I’ve gone through some experiences with the players in this program, I finally feel like I’ve made the transition. People in Baton Rouge now have confidence in what I’m doing here.”
