BATON ROUGE — LSU women’s tennis player Megan Falcon earned singles All-America honors for the second straight season, and Falcon finished ranked No. 19 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings released by the ITA on Friday.
One year after finishing No. 2 in the nation in singles with a 38-3 record, Falcon entered the NCAA Singles Championships this season listed as a No. 9-16 seed, which automatically qualified her for singles All-America honors.
Falcon, a junior from Alameda, Calif., finished with a 27-7 overall record, including a 19-4 dual record.
This season Falcon advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament where she fell to USC’s Lindsey Nelson, 6-3, 6-4. The loss marked the second straight season Nelson ended Falcon’s run in the tournament. Last season, Nelson defeated Falcon in the national semifinals.
Falcon’s run to the semifinal round a year ago marked the deepest run into the singles tournament for any Lady Tiger in program history.
Falcon also earned 12 wins against ranked opponents, one season after recording 26 victories over ranked foes.
In doubles, Falcon and junior Mykala Hedberg finished No. 28 in the final ITA rankings after advancing to the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championships. Falcon and Hedberg fell in straight sets to Clemson’s fourth-ranked Ani Mijacika and Carol Salge, 6-4, 6-3.
The Lady Tiger tandem finished with a 12-5 overall record and a 5-3 mark against ranked opponents after playing on the No. 1 court since the duo paired up in mid-February.
The ITA also released its final Regional Rankings, and as a team LSU finished No. 4 in the Southwest Region after compiling a 15-10 record, including 11 wins over ranked opponents.
In the individual singles rankings, Falcon finished No. 3 in the Southwest behind Baylor’s Zuzana Zemenova and Lenka Broosova.
Hedberg earned a ranking at No. 19 after finishing with a 17-17 overall record and two victories over ranked foes.
Sophomore Hannah Robinson also earned a spot at No. 27 in the final regional rankings after compiling a 25-9 overall record and a 17-6 dual mark, both of which rank second on the team behind Falcon.
In doubles, Falcon and Hedberg finished No. 4 in the final regional rankings.
