Ware Set for Platform Event at NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Sophomore Rachel Ware of the LSU diving team completed the second day of the 2008 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships by finishing 20th in the 3-meter event at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

The Richmond, Texas, native posted a score of 279.65 in the prelims to finish 20th out of the 38 participants. Ware also had a top-20 finish in the 1-meter event on Thursday where she finished 12th to receive honorable mention All-American honors.

Ware scored a 47.25 in the first round but stumbled in the second round with a score of 31.50. Ware showed great bounce back ability by posting back to back 50-plus scores including a 53.20 in the fourth round. The SEC Female Diver of the Year posted two more solid scores to climb back in the top 20.

“She performed well but just missed one dive that put her around 25 points behind the eight ball,” LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer said. “She had to fight back to finish where she did. I am proud of the way she fought back after the second round. This is elite level competition and in order to reach All-American status you have to have six great dives.”

Ware will compete in her final event Saturday when she takes part in the platform event. Prelims begin at 12:30 p.m. CT with finals at 6 p.m.
