AUBURN, Ala. — LSU divers look to advance to the 2008 NCAA Championships when they compete in the NCAA Zone “B” meet this weekend at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center.
The three-day competition begins Friday at noon with the men’s 3-meter springboard and the women’s 1-meter springboard. 37 teams are represented in Zone “B” and nearly 100 divers will be in competition. 10 male spots and 12 female spots are allocated from the Zone “B” meet.
“When we take a step back and look at what goals we had at the beginning of the season, we have already reached some of them but we still have some major goals ahead of us,” said LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer. “I am confident we are prepared and ready to accomplish those goals this weekend.”
The last time the Tigers competed was at the Southeastern Conference Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala., where the Lady Tigers won two individual championships.
SEC Female Diver of the Year Rachel Ware won the 1-meter championship and finished second in the 3-meter event.
Senior Paige Brown received first-team SEC honors after a heroic performance in the platform event at the conference championships. The senior Lady Tiger overcame a prelim injury that forced her to get 11 stitches on her heels to win the platform championship.
Michael Neubacher, who was named the SEC Freshman Diver of the Year, had a top-five finish in all three diving events at the conference championships, including a second-place finish in the platform event.
The Zone “B” meet is one of five zone meets taking place this weekend. Along with Auburn, Air Force, Buffalo, Houston and Ohio State will play host to a zone meet.
The women’s NCAA Championships will be held March 20-22 on the Ohio State campus and the men’s NCAA Championships takes place March 27-29 at the University of Washington.
