Women’s Tennis Takes Streak to No. 20 Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Fresh off a 4-3 upset victory at No. 15 Kentucky, the 21st-ranked LSU women’s tennis team looks for the weekend sweep against No. 20 Vanderbilt at noon at the Currey Tennis Center on Sunday.

The Lady Tigers (8-3, 3-0 SEC) won the doubles point against the Wildcats but fell behind 3-2 before Hannah Robinson and Staten Spencer rallied LSU to victory with wins on court five and six respectively.

Robinson leads LSU in wins with an 18-4 record, including a sparkling 10-1 dual record. No. 18 Megan Falcon bounced back from her first ever dual loss in strong fashion as she handily defeated UK’s 77th-ranked Sarah Woestmann, 6-1, 6-4. Falcon ranks second on the team with a 17-3 record, including a 9-1 record in dual play.

Falcon and her partner Mykala Hedberg dominated against the Wildcats’ 50th-ranked duo of Megan Broderick and Carolina Escamilla, beating the pair 8-2. The win was the first against a ranked opponent, but it moved their record to 5-1 on the season, all at the No. 1 position in dual play.

Despite its 0-3 conference record, Vanderbilt (8-3) sports three ranked singles players ? No. 35 Amanda Taylor, No. 37 Catherine Newman and No. 51 Courtney Ulery. Vanderbilt also features the nation’s 57th-ranked doubles team of Newman and Taka Bertrand.

On Friday, Vanderbilt fell, 5-2, to No. 30 Arkansas, but on March 5 they defeated No. 2 Georgia Tech, 4-3.

“Vanderbilt is going to be a formidable opponent,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “They just upset the No. 2 team in the country a few days ago, so it is going to be another dogfight for us. We have been playing with a lot of heart, and if we continue to improve I think we can do some good things.”

Vanderbilt leads the all-time series against LSU 17-14 following last season’s 5-2 victory over the Lady Tigers in Nashville.
