BATON ROUGE — In another example of LSU student-athletes making a positive impression on local youth, several members of the Southeastern Conference Western Division champion women’s soccer team spent time speaking to students at North Corbin Elementary School in Walker on Friday morning.
Nazily Alcoser, Casey Crawford, Jackie Moseley and Brittany Lowe took time to speak with the students at North Corbin as they prepare for the upcoming LEAP tests next week. The quartet discussed how to handle taking tests, how to prepare for the tests and how to stay motivated when things get tough. After they finished speaking with the students, they answered questions and offered advice.
The Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) is one of the tests in Louisiana’s criterion-referenced testing program. The test measures how well a student has mastered the state content standards. The LEAP test is administered at grades four and eight. If students do not meet certain standards based on the results of this test, then the student cannot be promoted to the next grade and must re-take the test until the requirements are met.
The school visits are sponsored by the Shaquille O’Neal CHAMPS/Life Skills program. The CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success)/Life Skills Program was designed by the NCAA to help student-athletes realize higher academic achievement, increase likelihood of graduation and enter a chosen profession with a higher level of vision, knowledge, motivation, self-responsibility and greater overall success. In Spring 2003, the CHAMPS/ Life Skills Program at LSU honored one of the Tigers’ most memorable graduates, Shaquille O’Neal, by naming the program after him.
