BATON ROUGE — Sunday could have also been called “Championship Sunday” for LSU as the Tigers picked up a pair of Southeastern Conference titles in the sports of women’s basketball and women’s track and field.
By winning a pair of SEC titles on Sunday, LSU has now claimed three conference championships during the 2007-08 academic year. LSU also won the 2007 SEC title in football. The three league titles by LSU thus far ties with Arkansas as the most in the SEC this year. Arkansas’ league titles have come in men’s and women’s cross country and men’s indoor track and field.
Last year, LSU won its only SEC title in women’s outdoor track and field.
On Sunday, the LSU women’s basketball team completed its sweep of conference foes with a 64-49 win over Mississippi State in Starkville. The win over the Bulldogs ran LSU’s league mark to a perfect 14-0 overall and gave the Lady Tigers their third SEC title in four years. LSU’s also won SEC titles in women’s basketball in 2005 and 2006.
The LSU women’s track and field team continued its dominance in the sport by claiming their 11th overall SEC title. The Lady Tigers racked up a total of 133 total points during the three-day event to outlast second-place Tennessee, who finished with 116 points.
The SEC title in indoor track marked the first for the LSU women since the 1999 season.
While the LSU men may have come up short in their bid for an SEC title, the Tiger track and field team finished second at the conference meet on Sunday with 108 points. Arkansas claimed the team title with 124 points.
Since the inception of the SEC, LSU has claimed a total of 112 league titles with men’s outdoor track and field leading the way with 22 championships to its credit. The LSU men’s golf team is second with 15 SEC titles and women’s indoor track and field third with 11.
