BATON ROUGE — Sprinter Trindon Holliday and center Sylvia Fowles were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week on Wednesday, following a vote by a local media panel.
Holliday outlasted some of top collegiate and professional sprinters in the country last week at the Tyson Invitational, winning the 60-meter dash title in blistering 6.60 seconds speed. The time, a new personal best for Holliday, was enough to edge American great Leonard Scott (6.62), defending NCAA champion Travis Padgett of Clemson (6.68) and reigning World Outdoor 200-meter bronze medalist Wallace Spearmon (6.73).
Holliday, a sophomore from Zachary, La., has now clocked personal bests in back-to-back weeks after finishing second to teammate Richard Thompson at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational last weekend with a time of 6.61. Holliday’s current best of 6.60 ranks as the third fastest in the NCAA and the fourth fastest in the United States this season.
Fowles averaged 19.5 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots in leading LSU to wins over top-ranked Tennessee and Ole Miss last week. Against Tennessee, the senior from Miami, Fla., led the Tigers with 17 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks in the Lady Tigers’ 78-62 come from behind victory.
Versus Ole Miss, Fowles scored 19 of her game-high 22 points in the opening half, a total that included 12 of the Lady Tigers’ first 19 points of the game.
With two double doubles on the week, Fowles now has 76 for her career, a mark that is just two shy of tying the SEC record of 78 held by Georgia’s Janet Harris. Fowles also became the fifth player in LSU history to reach 2,000 career points, as she finished the week with 2,022.
