BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s tennis team will play host to New Mexico at noon and Grambling at 5 p.m. in a doubleheader at W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium Saturday.
The Lady Tigers (3-2) are looking to rebound after a tough, 6-1, loss to Texas A&M on Feb. 10 in a marathon match that lasted more than four hours.
“New Mexico is a good team,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “We just need to make sure we come out ready to play. We have to stay focused and play our best each time we step out on the court. Grambling is improving their program each year, so we need to prepare ourselves for two tough matches.”
LSU is led in singles by junior All-American Megan Falcon who is currently ranked No. 8 nationally. Falcon enters the match against New Mexico (3-2) riding an eight-match win streak. The Alameda, Calif., native is 13-2 on the season and undefeated in dual play at 5-0.
In doubles, the Lady Tigers are paced by juniors Mykala Hedberg and Staten Spencer who are ranked No. 30 in the nation. The Lady Tiger tandem is 9-3 on the season, 4-1 in dual play and a perfect 2-0 against ranked competition.
LSU looks to extend the series lead over New Mexico, as the Lady Tigers hold a 2-1 advantage. The last time the two programs squared off was in 1989 when the Lobos won, 5-4 at Albuquerque, N.M.
Grambling enters the match against LSU with a 0-2 record on the season with a 7-0 loss to UL-Lafayette and a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Nicholls State. This will be the first meeting between LSU and Grambling.
