BATON ROUGE — LSU guard Marcus Thornton and gymnast Ashleigh Clare-Kearney were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week on Tuesday following a vote by a local media panel.
Thornton scored a career high-tying 27 points in back-to-back games versus Auburn and Vanderbilt last week. The junior from Baton Rouge now has 10 20-plus point games this season, including a streak of three straight, the second longest current streak in the SEC.
With the performance Thornton now ranks second in the league in scoring average during conference play.
Clare-Kearney guided the Tigers’ to a 195.900-195.300 win over Arkansas last week, winning the all-around title with a 39.550. She also either won outright or shared each of the meet’s four individual event titles, taking home top honors on the vault (9.925) and floor (9.900), while sharing the top spot on the bars (9.875) and beam (9.850).
On the year, Clare-Kearney has won three all-around titles and 10 individual event titles in three meets this season.
