BATON ROUGE — The LSU baseball squad returned to campus Monday for the first day of spring semester classes as the Tigers’ 2008 season opener is less than six weeks away.
LSU plays host to Indiana at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22 in Alex Box Stadium, the 70-year-old facility that will serve as the Tigers’ home for one final season. Construction has begun on the New Alex Box Stadium, which will open in 2009.
The 2008 Tigers feature 18 returning players, plus 20 newcomers that Collegiate Baseball magazine rated as the nation’s top recruiting class.
“I am very optimistic about this season because we have so much more depth than last year,” said second-year LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “I believe that the combination of the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class with our returning players gives us a chance to be a much-improved ball club in 2008.”
LSU held its first team meeting of the semester on Monday, and the Tigers will engage in individual workouts and conditioning drills for the next three weeks. The first full-squad practice will take place on Friday, Feb. 1 in Alex Box Stadium.
