BATON ROUGE — After playing a fall schedule that featured six out of seven matches against ranked opponents, LSU women’s tennis star Megan Falcon checked in at No. 8 in the first spring edition of the singles rankings, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Tuesday.
LSU also placed a doubles pair in the rankings as juniors Staten Spencer and Mykala Hedberg were ranked No. 30.
Falcon finished 5-2 in the fall, including winning her second straight title in the consolation bracket of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. Falcon defeated three opponents ranked 25th or better en route to the title.
Falcon, a junior from Alameda, Calif., also advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Indoor Championships in November before falling to eventual champion Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas in three sets.
During the fall Spencer and Hedberg teamed up at the SEC Coaches Classic in November and finished with a 3-1 record. The Lady Tiger tandem upset No. 21 Amanda Taylor and Courtney Ulery of Vanderbilt 8-5 in the quarterfinals.
After falling in the semifinals, Spencer and Hedberg bounced back by knocking off Auburn’s Jil Hastenrath and Mary Claire Slade 8-2.
The Lady Tigers will open the spring season at the Virginia Classic Jan. 18-20.
