Fowles, Johnson Named LSU Athletes of the Week

BATON ROUGE — Basketball swept this week’s LSU Male and Female Athlete of the Week honors as Chris Johnson and Sylvia Fowles were both recognized on Wednesday.

Johnson, a junior out of Montross, Va., was named to Jay Bilas’ ESPN.com Maui Invitational all-tournament team after averaging 16 points and seven rebounds over three games last week. Bilas noted that Johnson “oozes potential” after he posted a career-high 19 points against Oklahoma State and followed that with the first double-double of his collegiate career against Chaminade.

Fowles averaged a double double through two games last week, scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in the win over UL-Lafayette on Wednesday, before posting 13 points and 12 boards in a narrow loss to No. 7 Rutgers on Sunday.

The 6-6 center from Miami, Fla., also became just the sixth woman in collegiate basketball history to dunk in a game when she accomplished the feat in the first half of the ULL contest. Her dunk was featured as the No. 4 Play of the Day on ESPN’s SportsCenter that night.
