PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — LSU women’s tennis star Megan Falcon closed out her stay at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships presented by Fila by claiming the consolation singles title for the second year in a row on Sunday.
Falcon faced stiff competition in the first set as No. 8 Georgia Rose of Northwestern posted a 6-2 win. However, Falcon managed to pull out a tough 6-4 triumph against Rose in the second set. Falcon, the nation’s top-ranked player, dominated the third set and claimed the title with a 6-1 score.
“I thought that was a high level of tennis by both players,” head coach Tony Minnis said. “Megan was down and fought back. She showed a lot of character and toughness coming back after losing the first set.”
Her victory marked the second year in a row Falcon has won the consolation singles title, as the Alameda, Calif., native knocked off three highly-ranked opponents en route to the championship.
After receiving a first round bye, Falcon defeated 25th-ranked Ela Kaluder of Arkansas in the quarterfinals. Falcon then beat 15th-ranked Jessica Nguyen of Stanford in the semifinals before fighting off eighth-ranked Rose in the finals.
“After a tough start in the tournament it was nice to win the consolation bracket,” Falcon said. “I had never faced Rose before, and she is a solid player.”
The Lady Tigers will be back in action at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational at Midland, Texas Oct. 12-14.
