BATON ROUGE — The LSU softball team allowed only one run to go undefeated in five games in the 2007 Fall Collegiate Classic, as the Tigers outscored their opponents 35-1 last weekend at Tiger Park.
LSU began the weekend with an 8-0 win over Hinds Community College. The Tigers continued with a 6-0 win over LSU-Eunice before closing out the day with a 5-1 win over Bossier Parish Community College. On Sunday, LSU dominated BPSCC with a 14-0 win before closing out the tournament with a 2-0 win over LSU-Alexandria.
As a team, LSU posted 50 hits and recorded a.424 batting average on the weekend with a 0.19 earned run average. In addition, the Tigers allowed only seven hits in 31 innings with 54 strikeouts, while striking out only twice themselves.
Sophomore Jazz Jackson led the team with a .692 batting average on the weekend, going 9-for-13 with a home run and six stolen bases. Senior All-American Killian Roessner went 5-for-9 for a .556 average including a double, a home run and three walks. Freshman Casey Faile also hit .556 for the weekend with a double, while senior Erika Sluss went 5-for-10 with a home run. Senior Dee Dee Henderson led the team with 12 stolen bases while hitting .455, and senior Shannon Stein posted a pair of doubles and a walk in her .500 average.
In the circle, junior Dani Hofer was 2-0 in eight innings, allowing only one hit with 14 strikeouts. Senior Tiffany Garcia went 1-0 with three hits allowed in eight innings, giving up the only run of the tournament. Sophomore Cody Trahan pitched seven innings of no-hit action with 15 strikeouts. In addition to her contributions at the plate, Faile was 1-0 with a team-leading 18 strikeouts in eight innings.
Henderson was the spark in the 8-0 win over Hinds Community College. She went 3-for-3 with three runs scored in the contest. Also providing multiple-hit outings were Jackson, Sluss and Rachel Mitchell. Trahan earned the win with three innings of no-hit work, while Faile came on in relief and allowed the only hit of the contest as the pair combined for 12 strikeouts.
Jackson and senior Tayl’r Hollis were the keys at the plate for the Tigers against LSU-Eunice. Jackson was 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and two runs scored, while Hollis went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run. Hofer started and earned the win with only one hit allowed in four innings with six strikeouts. Garcia came on in relief and gave up one hit in three innings with four strikeouts.
In the first meeting with Bossier Parish Community College, Jackson went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Roessner added a two-run home run as part of a 2-for-3 outing. Garcia started and gave up one run on two hits before being relieved by Trahan, who struck out all six batters she faced. Faile allowed one hit in two innings with three strikeouts, while Hofer closed it out with a perfect seventh innings.
The Tigers dominated Bossier parish Community College in the second meeting as five players tallied multiple hits. Henderson and Mitchell both went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Jackson and Stein were 2-for-3 with a run scored each. Roessner was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Hofer and Trahan combined for the no-hitter as Hofer earned the win with five strikeouts in three innings and Trahan had three strikeouts in two innings.
In the final game of the tournament, LSU posted two runs on a two-run home run by Hollis. Faile started and allowed just two hits with nine strikeouts in four innings. Garcia closed it out with three innings of no-hit work and three strikeouts.
The Tigers have two weeks remaining in fall practice. The 2008 LSU campaign with begin at home with the Easton Tiger Classic on Feb. 15-17. The Tigers will host St John’s, Ball State, Nicholls State and Chattanooga in the three-day tournament at Tiger Park.
