SOMIS, Calif. — The LSU men’s golf team wrapped up the 2007 ClubGlove Intercollegiate on Tuesday by posting a 27-over par 315 in the final round at Saticoy Country Club to finish in sixth place in the 12-team field at 77-over 941 for 54 holes.
Junior Jarrod Barsamian fired a 5-over 77 to lead the Tigers on the final day of the championship despite winds gusting more than 50 mph for the second straight day and smoke from nearby wildfires continuing to blanket the course throughout the round.
Barsamian, who finished in a tie for 47th at 28-over 244, improved in each round after opening the tournament Monday with a 16-over 88 in the first round and a 7-over 79 in the second.
Freshmen John Peterson and Clayton Rotz were the team’s top finishers in the individual standings as the duo tied one another for 17th place with a three-round total of 18-over 234. Rotz posted a 6-over 78 while Peterson carded an 8-over 80 in the final round.
Senior Brian Noonan matched Peterson’s effort with an 8-over 80 to finish in a tie for 47th place at 28-over 244, while freshman Andrew Loupe was one shot back in a tie for 49th place.
“This was a good experience for our guys to come out West and play a difficult golf course in difficult conditions,” said LSU head coach Chuck Winstead. “We look forward to another good tournament next week as we wrap up the fall season. It’ll be our fifth tournament this fall, which is good for our young squad to have that kind of experience heading into the break.”
Tournament host Pepperdine won the team title by 10 shots over Loyola Marymount with a 54-hole total of 41-over 905, including a tournament low 11-over 299 in Tuesday’s final round.
Georgia State’s Joel Sjoholm, who opened Tuesday’s action with a four-stroke lead in the race for medalist honors, held on for a one-stroke victory over Andrew Putnam of Pepperdine despite carding an 8-over 80 in the final round. Sjoholm posted a 9-over 225 in three rounds for the win.
The Tigers wrap up the fall season next week as they travel to Greensboro, N.C., to compete in the Bridgestone Collegiate Championship hosted by UNC-Greensboro at Forest Oaks Country Club from Oct. 29-30. The squad breaks for three months before opening the spring season at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., from Feb. 9-10.
