BATON ROUGE — LSU quarterback Matt Flynn was rewarded on Monday for playing the best game of his career in the Tigers’ 30-24 win over Auburn on Saturday as he was named the Southeastern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced.
Flynn, a senior from Tyler, Texas, set career highs for completions (22), attempts (34) and passing yards (314) and tied another career-best with three touchdown passes, including the game-winner with one second left, in the LSU victory.
Flynn also rushed for 34 yards, including runs of 10 and seven yards, on LSU’s game winning drive. Trailing 24-23 with just over three minutes left, Flynn directed the Tigers on a 9-play, 58-yard drive, which was capped with a 22-yard TD pass to Demetrius Byrd with one second left in the contest.
Trailing 17-7 at halftime, Flynn took over in the second half, guiding LSU to scores on five of its six possessions in the third and fourth quarters. LSU outscored Auburn, 23-7, in the second half to record its second fourth quarter comeback in the last three weeks.
In all, the Flynn directed an LSU offense to a total of 488 yards, including 356 yards in the second half. Auburn’s defense came into the contest ranked second in the SEC in total defense and scoring defense.
The honor is the first of Flynn’s career, who improved to 7-1 as LSU’s starting quarterback with the victory.
